Jairus Miller Presents Soundscapes Volume 2 : The Interview
22.02.2010

Jairus Miller Presents Soundscapes Volume 2 : The Interview

First off, I'd like to thank Chris Sterio and the whole crew at Source of Gravity for giving me the opportunity to create the second installment of the Soundscapes Mix Series. It's been great to be a part of such a dedicated and talented group of people who really care about music!

For this mix, I was looking to keep things interesting with solid beats and strong melodic themes. Since I'm not really a DJ, my approach to a mix is definetly different than that of the selectors who play out regularly and listen to alot of tracks each week. One result of this perspective can be seen in my inclusion of some older tracks in this mix, not only from Source of Gravity, but from my own "vault" as it were. Truthfully, I'm kind of embarrassed to use my own tracks in a mix, but it's often an issue of expediency, and sometimes they do even fit the overall theme of the mix, lol. Hopefully in Soundscapes Volume 2 I've been able to provide a good balance between my own productions and those of other artists.

Is this mix unabashedly old-school in some ways? You bet! I'm not really a big believer in chasing trends, plus it's nice to look back sometimes and see how we got here, too. I tend to see electronic music as a continuous spectrum, and I've chosen music here from a variety of places in that spectrum, recombined into a collage that hopefully respects both that which has come before and that which is yet to come.

Here are some of my thought on the songs that I used in the mix:

Peekaboo: This track started out as a more minimal German-style deep tech-house piece, but (as oftens happens with me) I ended up adding somewhat more prominent melodies. It's still pretty chilled though, even though I sped up the tempo to match the mix.

The Messenger (Neil Kolo Remix): This remixed Joshua Thomas track from a while ago had that nice mid-tempo electro feel Neil Kolo is famous for. It's very controlled and has a quiet intensity that worked well to get the set going.

Strange Attractor: This a track of mine from a few years ago that never found a home and had been sitting aound on my hard drive. I know that some people hate it when you mix breaks and house, but I enjoy the contrast, and this type of progressive breakbeat sound isnt played much any more, so it (hopefully) keeps the listener guessing a bit about what's coming next.

Soloplex (Dan Welton Remix): Dan Welton provides a massive remix of the Nicholas Bennison original, which mixed in nicely with the awkward outro to Strange Attractor. I've always loved Dan's tracks - big progressive tribal house, with impeccable production values. IMHO, this song doesn't sound dated at all.

Genesis: From what I gather, this was a very well received track when it was released, and helped to cement Source of Gravity's reputation for quality progressive music. It has all the classic Source elements: a strong pulse, incredible atmosphere, creativity, and passion. For the mix, I liked the contrast of this more exotic and "spaced out" feel to the straight-up energy of Soloplex. This track also has great dynamics, and seems to provide a nice segue into the second half of the mix.

Close Encounter: This track also started out a bit differently than it ended up, as my original intent as more of a dry electro shugger, and the end result sounds a bit more like classic prog. Since I'm a guitar player, I have a certain fondness for that distinctive midrange twang of the six-string, and it's always fun to incorporate a little bit into EDM tracks. When I listen to this song I tend to image traveling and seeing new things.

Zero Hour: I had been listening to Markus Schulz's Miami '05 mix alot when I made this one. I tried to capture at least some of that vibe - big basslines, simple repeated melodies, and relentless drums. This track makes me think about watching the sun set and thinking about the future.

Silicon Sea: This song was created right after Zero Hour, after I had been listening to Markus Schulz's Ibiza '06 mix, lol. Similar idea to the previous track, with a slightly darker, more melancholy vibe. Has almost a tech-trance aspect to it.

Back To Zion: This is a really old track of mine, it definetly sounds a bit raw compared to the more recent stuff, but it fit the mix well as a follow-up to Silicon Sea. I still like the trance melodies and the overall intensity. I actually made this after seeing "The Matrix: Reloaded" and hearing that track "Zion" by Fluke. I thought of this as kind of a sequal - more aggressive and filled with regret, like maybe things were't going to turn out so well, but ultimately hope still existed.

Through the Glass Darkly: A little while ago I created a bunch of Pys-Trance tracks as kind of an experiment, and this was one of them. I pitched it down a bit to fit the mix, but definetly has many of the characteristics of a straight up pys-trance production. The idea was to the have the mix start very housey and end up in a more intense trance-like place, kind of like going from 9 PM to 2 AM. I thought that this would be the right way to end "the night", so to speak.
